Abs are Made in the Kitchen

Ever heard the saying “abs are made in the kitchen”? Well it’s true! While training your abs WILL build the muscle… you will NOT be able to see them if you have a layer of fat over the top! In order to “get abs”, you have to lower your overall body fat! Another saying we hear alot is “70% diet, 30% training”… I’d go a step further and say “80% diet, 20% training”.

Most people don’t realize just how important proper nutrition is. While calories in versus calories out will determine weight loss or gain … the TYPE of weight lost or gained is determined by what you’re eating! For example: If you are eating in a caloric deficit and hardly eating any protein, it’s likely that the majority of weight you’re losing is coming from muscle. Same goes for when you are eating in a caloric surplus … if you’re eating clean with plenty of protein, it’s likely muscle ... whereas if you were eating mainly junk food, it’s more likely to be fat. (But remember, if you aren’t incorporating resistance training, you are at a much higher risk of losing muscle and/or gaining fat!)

Also, keep in mind that it is practically impossible to gain ONLY muscle without a little bit of fat along with it.. just as it is impossible to lose ONLY fat without losing a little bit of muscle.

Eat clean and within the calorie range you have determined you need for your goals, and you will likely reach them much faster than if you are “eating dirty”!

Visualize your success!

As you work towards your goals, do you picture yourself the way you want to look? Do you see yourself as already fit and healthy, tight and toned? Visualize yourself as you want to be! Then make it happen! Your self confidence will receive a boost and your motivation will increase!

Sometimes it's hard to visualize exactly what your goals are in terms of diet and exercise. Sure, we all want to be "fit" and "sexy" but there is a whole spectrum of bodies that fall into those categories. Yesterday, as I flipped through a magazine with my friend, I pointed out a girl and said, "Now that's what I want to look like this summer!" and shockingly, my friend frowned and said, "Eeeww! She's so muscle-y!". Mind you, this wasn't a female body builder, but rather just a woman who obviously worked out consistently, and looked great in her swimsuit. It made me realize that we all have different goals in our heads when we're exercising, running, lifting, steaming vegetables....

With that in mind, I thought that it would be a good idea to create a visionary board of my goals to keep myself focused on what it is that I am working towards. Who do I want to emulate, what is my body capable of, and what kind of cute swimming suit do I picture myself wearing poolside in a few short months, er, weeks!?  Who are a few of your role models, what are a few of your goals, and motivational images? Maybe you could do the same yourself. Many people in the fitness/health industry even post their workouts and daily eating examples on their website or Facebook pages for you to see (and to keep themselves accountable). Try it! Wouldn't it be nice if you were able to pin a picture of YOURSELF on your board as a goal!?

What would be on YOUR board? Go ahead and visualize yourself the way you WANT to be!  Then achieve it!

Don't Compare Yourself to Others

Have you ever thought, "I'll never be as skinny and/or proportionate as her"? Or what about, "no matter how much weight I lose, I'm always going to be bigger than her"?
Don’t ever let a comparison break you. We all know people who we view as “perfect.” The one who we wish we looked/spoke/thought/wrote/studied like. The person with the good grades, the long legs, the swaying hips. The girl who no matter what she wears, she looks great...even in sweats and a baggy T-shirt!  But you know what? I would bet my life that someone out there (probably LOTS of someones) look at you and think the same thing.

Listen for it. You’ll hear it in someone's voice. The wistful sound of them wishing they could be more like you. Hear it and remember you are someone else’s motivation. Let that motivate you to be the best you that you can be!

Endurance!

Endurance is perhaps one of the most important elements of staying on the road to better health, because it is the force that keeps us going strong. Not surprisingly, the concept of endurance is mentioned often in the Bible because it is required to walk the path of faith in Jesus Christ...a path that is often filled with obstacles.

The path to fitness (I'm sure you've noticed) is also filled with obstacles, but most of these obstacles reside in our own minds. This is where your endurance comes in: remind yourself that you can overcome those obstacles. Those hurdles aren't as high as they look! Your "I can" attitude partnered with your deep reliance on God's stength, will help you jump higher and go further than you ever thought possible.

Today ask God to help you stay focused on your goals. Ask Him to remind you often that the obstacles we see filling our path are mostly in our head and ask His help in overcoming them. Ask Him to fill you with great amounts of endurance so that, as you go further along on your fitness journey, the obstacles seem smaller and smaller.

Romans 15:5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had.

What does TODAY mean to you?

It's time to think about TODAY. What does TODAY mean? What will it bring? How will I meet it? What does it mean in relationship to yesterday and tomorrow?

We can only live ONE DAY AT A TIME. Yesterday is a cancelled check and tomorrow is a promissory note. All we have for cash on hand is TODAY. We have a choice to make it a good one or a bad one. Yes, bad things happen to us sometimes. And sometimes we have no control over those happenings, but we do have control over how we REACT to them.

TODAY I choose to react positively!!

TODAY I will dwell on the POSITIVE.

TODAY I will RENEW my efforts and resolve to stay EATING CLEAN.

TODAY I will take the time I need for me--to do the things I need to do.

TODAY I will know that I CAN DO THIS.

TODAY I will DEDICATE my time and energy to my plan.

TODAY I will say NO when it means sticking up for myself.

TODAY I will UNDERSTAND why this is important to me and others will see.

TODAY I will be PATIENT with myself and others.

TODAY I will reach out to someone who needs a little ENCOURAGEMENT--next time it might be me.

TODAY I will realize Living Healthy is the BEST thing for me and for my family.

TODAY I will ENJOY my successes that are and DREAM of those yet to come.

TODAY I will be sure I am PREPARED for tomorrow.

TODAY I will reflect on the DRIVE and SKILLS I have incorporated into my lifestyle.

TODAY I will focus on the ACCOMPLISHMENTS I have made and the obstacles I have OVERCOME.

TODAY I will PLAN to STICK TO MY PLAN.

TODAY I will abandon myself to my DRIVE.

TODAY I will put all my SKILLS FOR SURVIVAL to work.

TODAY is the only day I have any control over.

TODAY I choose to make it good, to be happy and serene, and to eat only nutritious foods.

TODAY will be a GOOD day!!! BECAUSE I AM BLESSED!!!
